English Heritage is a non-departmental public body of the United Kingdom Government (Dept. for Culture, Media and Sport) with a broad remit of managing the historic environment of England.

English Heritage was set up under the terms of the National Heritage Act 1983. Its functions had previously been undertaken by part of the Department of the Environment. The 1983 Act also dissolved the body that had hitherto provided advice — the Ancient Monuments Board for England. The former Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (RCHME) was merged with English Heritage on 1 April 1999.Its best known role is as the steward of a large number of significant historical and archaeological sites, from Stonehenge to the world's earliest iron bridge.

However it has major responsibilities in conservation, giving advice, registering and protecting the historic environment. It also maintains a public archive, the National Monuments Record (NMR).

The visitors were invited by Programme Director of LFCs new stadium, Andrea Titherington to not only view the clubs plans for the new Anfield but also the work being done to restore some of Anfields oldest Victorian houses and buildings. The visitors toured all round the sites for the new stadium, plaza and finally the AHDC show house on Tancred Road. They firstly got the chance to look round the Rockfield site which is soon to also be regenerated. The houses date back to the early 1900s and some have up to five bedrooms and space for en-suite bathrooms as well as family sized ones. The visitors were more than impressed by the transformation of Tancred Road, and how AHDC have managed to keep so much of the original exterior brick work. Professor John K Walton, from Leeds Metropolitan University commented,

“I think the houses look tremendous. I will be looking forward to seeing the whole area once it has all been regenerated.” EH Delegates EH Delegates
